7 days, 50 diapers, 1 box of wipes, 30 hours of sleep, and here we are.
Taking a newborn home has been pretty much what we expected, lots of diaper changes and little sleep. Jill is breastfeeding, which was a challenge at first, but both her and Amelia are getting better at it each day.

Speaking of feeding, Amelia has had quite an appetite, and even though we'd heard of "cluster feeding," nothing could have really prepared us for just how often she'd need to be fed.Based on the hospital's recommendation, we've been documenting all of the feedings & diaper changes during the first week. With this information we can make sure she's hitting her milestones, as well as for our reference. The results surprised us both; one day she fed 16 times, with 11 diaper changes! With so many diaper changes, and feedings, you can imagine how much sleep we were able to get during her feeding frenzy. Luckily each day gets easier, and she seems to be napping better between feedings.
On Monday we had our first pediatrician appointment, which was the first time we'd taken Amelia out since our return home. Overall things went smoothly, and Amelia fell asleep shortly after being put in her car seat. At the doctor's office, Amelia got weighed in at 7-7, even after she peed all over the scale, which was a gain of 4 oz since her post birth weight loss, and she is on track to being back at her birth weight very soon. The transition to parenthood can certainly be challenging, but luckily I am able to take time off of work to bond with Amelia, and help out while Jill recovers from delivery. One of the biggest changes I've noticed is the perception of time. Logically I know that it has already been a week, but if I didn't have a calendar in front of me I probably wouldn't even know what day it was.
Thanks again to everyone who has expressed their congratulations, and we'll try to post more updates soon.
Gorgeous pics guys - I got all nosy and checked out what you've posted on smugmug too ;-) The ones of you two with Amelia on your ride home from the hospital are precious and touch a soft spot in my heart. :)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for us to see you in person to give you big hugs and hold Amelia for the first time!! So glad to hear all is going well. Not surprised about the lack of sleep ;-) It will get better - eventually!! Take care of yourselves.
